How far it actually is from downtown Redwood City

El Camino Real runs out of downtown Redwood City and straight on into San Carlos, and our door at 1658 sits on that same street. From the restaurants around Broadway it is usually a 5 to 10 minute drive when traffic behaves. No freeway, no bridge, no parking structure. Street parking on El Camino Real out front is free, and the storefront glass carries the number, the hours and the phone in letters you can read from the sidewalk.

Trains work too. San Carlos is the next Caltrain stop from Redwood City heading toward San Francisco, one stop each way, and both platforms sit about a mile from the studio. Evening service thins out, so check the last train before you build the ride home around it. Anyone coming in from Atherton or Menlo Park uses the same stretch of El Camino Real, just from the other end.

Type "massage near Redwood City" into a phone and the results stay inside your own city limits. The reason to look one town over is what the booking gets you. We are open 10 AM to 9 PM, all 7 days, and the couples booking is a private room with two tables in it. Call (650) 622-8666 if you want to know what is free tonight before you leave the house.

What the couples booking actually gets you

Couples Massage is $189 for 60 minutes, $279 for 90 minutes and $369 for 120 minutes. That covers both people, not each, so an hour works out to roughly $95 a head. Two therapists work at the same time, one to a table, and the room stays yours for the length of the session.

Hot stones, hot towels, hot compress and cupping are listed as part of the Couples Massage rather than sold at the counter afterwards. So is the quiet. Nobody has to make conversation for an hour, which sounds like a small thing until you have sat through a dinner where you were both too tired to try. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health groups massage with the other mind and body approaches people reach for under stress, while being clear that the research behind any single one of them is limited.

What the room does not do is fix a specific injury for either of you. If one of you has a shoulder that has hurt for 3 months, book the massage, enjoy the evening, and still see a clinician about the shoulder. An hour on the table is a good hour. It is not a diagnosis.

One price for two people. Sixty minutes at $189 is about $95 each, and the second therapist is already in the room.

Couples or Four Hands: same price, different arithmetic

Four Hands Massage costs exactly what Couples Massage costs at every length: $189 for 60 minutes, $279 for 90, $369 for 120. Two therapists are in the room either way. The only thing that changes is how many people are on the tables.

Split $189 between two guests and each of you paid about $95 for an hour with one therapist. Spend the same $189 on Four Hands and one guest gets both therapists for that hour, which is closer to twice the hands per minute of a $109 Signature Massage and feels nothing like it. Neither option is the upgrade. They answer different questions.

For an evening out the couples room is usually the right call, because the point is being in the same room at the same time. Four Hands earns its place when one person is the one who actually needs the work, or when you are buying a birthday present rather than planning a night.

Either booking takes a little more notice than a single massage does, since two therapists have to be free in the same hour. That is the practical argument for picking a time on Square a few days out instead of at 6 PM on a Friday.

When one of you wants firm pressure and the other does not

The menu has 8 services and not one of them is called Deep Tissue. That is deliberate. Deep tissue is a pressure, not a product, and you get it by booking the massage you want and telling the therapist how hard to work. Square's own description of our Massage + Lymphatic Facial says as much: it opens with a 60 minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage, your pick at the table.

In the couples room this matters more than it does anywhere else, because two people almost never want the same pressure. Each therapist works their own table. One of you can ask for firm work across the shoulders while the other gets something light enough to fall asleep under. Say it in the first 2 minutes rather than the last 2.

NCCIH reports that the risk of harmful effects from massage appears to be low, and that the rare serious problems on record tend to involve very vigorous techniques. Firm is fine. Pain is information. Tell the therapist and the pressure comes down inside a stroke or two.

A therapist can feel a knot. They cannot feel how much you are willing to put up with.

  • Name the place, not the feeling. "Upper back and the right side of my neck" beats "wherever you think."
  • Give a number when they check in. "That is about a 7, take it to a 5" is easier to act on than "a bit less."
  • Say if you want the cupping skipped. It is included, not compulsory, and it can leave round marks that fade over a few days.
  • If either of you is pregnant, book Prenatal Massage instead, at $119 for 60 minutes or $159 for 90, and tell your clinician you are going.

Eating first, and why the 9 PM close matters

We close at 9 PM, every day of the week, which is the whole reason a Redwood City dinner works as the first half of an evening. The arithmetic is simple. A 60 minute couples session that ends at 9 PM starts at 8 PM. A 90 minute one starts at 7:30 PM. A 120 minute one starts at 7 PM. Pick the table time first and the restaurant reservation second.

Go easy on the meal itself. An hour face down on a full stomach is uncomfortable, and there is real pressure across the lower ribs during back work. Mayo Clinic Health System frames massage as something that may ease stress and help people relax, used alongside the rest of your care rather than in place of it. That is a fair description of what a good evening does and does not accomplish.

The order reverses just as well. We open at 10 AM, so an afternoon booking followed by an early dinner is the same evening run backwards, and it does not depend on a 9 PM finish.

  1. Fix the end of the evening first. We stop at 9 PM every day, so that is the hard edge to work back from.
  2. Subtract the session: 60, 90 or 120 minutes, plus a few minutes on each side to change and settle.
  3. Book the massage before the restaurant, so the appointment that needs two therapists is the one everything else fits around.
  4. Drive in along El Camino Real. Street parking out front is free and the door reads 1658.
  5. Tell them at the start if either of you wants firm pressure, or wants the cupping left out.

Gift cards, and giving an evening instead of a dinner

Square gift cards are sold online and are not tied to one service, which makes them the clean way to hand someone the couples room without choosing a date on their behalf. A $189 card covers a 60 minute Couples Massage outright. A $279 card covers 90 minutes. If they would rather spend it on a $109 Signature Massage on a Tuesday, the card does that just as well.

The mistake people make is fixing the evening in advance. Two therapists in the same hour takes more coordination than one, so give the card with room to plan and let them book on Square or call (650) 622-8666 themselves.

There is one studio, at 1658 El Camino Real, San Carlos, CA 94070, so there is no wrong location to send anyone to. Redwood City, Atherton and Menlo Park all sit within the same short run of El Camino Real.

Questions people ask

How far is Harbor Wellness Massage from Redwood City?

The studio is at 1658 El Camino Real in San Carlos, on the same street that runs through downtown Redwood City. By car it is usually a 5 to 10 minute drive. By train, San Carlos is the next Caltrain stop from Redwood City heading toward San Francisco, and both platforms sit about a mile from the door.

How much is a couples massage near Redwood City?

Couples Massage is $189 for 60 minutes, $279 for 90 minutes and $369 for 120 minutes, and the price covers both people rather than each. The 60 minute booking works out to roughly $95 a head. Hot stones, hot towels, hot compress and cupping are listed as part of the service.

Do both of us have to want the same pressure?

No. Two therapists work in the room, one per table, so each of you sets your own pressure. Say it in the first 2 minutes rather than at the end. Firm work should not hurt, and if it does, tell the therapist and it comes down straight away.

Can we book a couples massage at 8 PM?

An 8 PM start works for a 60 minute session, because we close at 9 PM every day. A 90 minute session needs to begin by 7:30 PM and a 120 minute session by 7 PM. Book on Square or call (650) 622-8666 to see what is open that evening.

Is there a deep tissue option for couples?

There is no separate Deep Tissue booking on the menu of 8 services. Deep tissue is a pressure you ask for. Book the Couples Massage and tell your therapist you want firm work. Square's own description of the Massage + Lymphatic Facial uses the same logic: it begins with a 60 minute Deep Tissue or Swedish Massage, your choice.

Are massage therapists in California certified?

California runs a voluntary state certification program through the California Massage Therapy Council, and a CAMTC-certified therapist carries a state ID card. It is a fair thing to ask about at any studio on the Peninsula, ours included. We are at 1658 El Camino Real, open 10 AM to 9 PM daily, on (650) 622-8666.
